Highlanders Getting Ready For Day 2 of the Montana Open

The Montana Open is hands down the TOUGHEST Youth Tournament in the Region. This year’s version featured 2,041 grapplers from 16 different states. The Glasgow Wrestling Club brought a record 57 kids to the event, making them the 5th largest team in attendance. The Highlanders scored 254 points to finish in 5th Place Overall out of 157 teams. The 5th place finish ties the club record from last season at the Montana Open. The Highlanders topped every Class A and Class B/C feeder program at the prestigous event. Team Champs (Billings West), Team Real Life (Post Falls, Idaho), Billings Wrestling Club, and Mine Yard Dogs (Butte) were the only four teams to finish ahead of GWC in the final standings.
Three wrestlers claimed “The Skull” by winning Individual Championships and a CLUB RECORD 33 Individuals placed in the top 6 at the event to find themselves on the podium! Last year’s total of 24 placers was the previous standard. The three champions is tied for the 2nd most for the Highlanders at the Montana Open in the 17-year history of the event.
6th Graders, Jack Morehouse and Aiden Aune, will now represent Team Montana at the AAU National Duals in Iowa this weekend as the youth season officially comes to a close. It was another ultra-succesfull season for the local squad and they will be back and ready to make some more noise next winter.

Highlanders Provide More Metra Magic

Taden Sundeen Claims 2nd Consecutive AAU State Championship

The Glasgow Wrestling Club has really been making the Metra in Billings their 2nd “Home” over the last few years and they continued that trend this weekend at the State AAU Folkstyle Tournament! The 1,592 wrestlers who competed over three days were the most ever in a State AAU Tournament in Montana. The Highlanders were a BIG part of helping set the new mark. A record 68 Highlanders competed at State AAU. Breaking last year’s record of 53 participants. GWC was the 5th largest club in attendance. Only Team Champs (Billings West), Heights Wrestling Club (Billings Skyview), Laurel, and Miles City brought larger squads than our local “feeder” program.
At the end of a LONG weekend of wrestling and outstanding performances; a couple more Club RECORDS were set! Our Highlanders finished with 37 State Placers; that is a NEW club record, breaking last year’s total of 32. Over HALF of our wrestlers competing in the event found their way onto the podium with a Top 6 finish. Wow.
We crowned EIGHT Individidual State Champions over the weekend. That is the 2nd most in club history. The boys, however, won seven of those Individual Titles; which ties a club record set way back in 1992.
This event is a TRUE ALL-Class State Tournament and judging by the final team standings, It was another outstanding performance by GWC! The Highlander Boys finished in 8th Place Overall out of 73 Clubs with 439.5 points and the Highlander Girls finished in 4th Place Overall out of 55 clubs with 208 points. That marks 8 consecutive years in the Top 10 for the Boys and 3 consecutive years in the Top 4 for the Girls. The Boys also finished in 2nd Place for the famed Bobby McKinley “10-Man” Traveling Trophy for a 2nd consecutive year. This year they were edged by the Billings Wrestling Club.
At the conclusion of the tournament; 6th Graders, Jack Morehouse and Aiden Aune both qualified for Team Montana! The boys will repesent the club and our great state at the AAU National Duals in Iowa on April 1st-2nd. Morehouse will be on the Middle School B Team, while Aune has secured his spot on the Middle School C Team.
We will officially put a bow on the 2023 season next Friday thru Sunday at the Montana Open. The “Open” is the premier youth wrestling event in the region and it will take place right back at the Metra in Billings. The Glasgow Wrestling Club is expected to invade the event with a RECORD 64 participants.

Highlanders Finish Regular Season at Brodie Gorder

GWC Finishes in 4th Place at the Brodie Gorder Memorial Team Duals for 2nd Consecutive Year

The Brodie Gorder Memorial Weekend is always one of the TOUGHEST events of the year and this year was no different. The “Brodie” traditionally closes out the regular season and provides our Wrestlers with excellent competition as we head into State AAU and the Montana Open the next two weekends at the Billings Metra!
On Saturday, The Team Duals kicked it all off with 18 of the best Clubs in the region in attendance. For a 2nd consective year, GWC would claim 4th place honors. Matching the best finish in Club history at the event. The team duals provide an opportunity for individuals to shine in a team atmosphore. Our kids do an excellent job supporting their teammates.
Due to the winter weather conditions that slammed Eastern Montana in recent days, half of our original entrees were unable to attend the event. However, 28 Highlanders still competed in the individual tournament on Sunday at Sidney High School Gymnasium. GWC was paced by SIX individual CHAMPIONS and eighteen Top 3 finishers! Good job kids and coaches and good luck the next two weekends.

Dual scores for the Highlanders on Saturday:

Round 1– Glasgow 72 Dakota Storm 45
Quarterfinals- Glasgow 72 Billings Heights (Billings Skyview) 33
Semifinals- Team Champs Black (Billings West) 61 Glasgow 37
Consolation Semifinals- Glasgow 63 Huntley Project 40
Consolation Finals (3rd/4th)- Dakota Rattlers (Minot, ND) 51 Glasgow 48

GWC Finishes Strong in Glendive and Lewistown

CJ Sillerud “Hanging” with Coach Sillerud after going 5-0 on the Day!

Another weekend, another outstanding performance by the Glasgow Highlanders! This Saturday and Sunday, brought events in Glendive and Lewistown. GWC sent 35 grapplers to Glendive and came away with an impressive 17 Individual CHAMPIONS. 28 of our 35 Highlanders claimed Top 3 finishes at the event. It was the final regular season event for the “Northeast Division” and our club left no doubt on who currently holds the strength.
Nineteen of our 5th thru 8th graders attended Lewistown on Saturday, for the prestigous Montana Middle School State Championships. It was a grueling 14-hour day that saw some of our older Highlanders wrestle up to 8 matches! At the conclusion of the event, the Glasgow Wrestling Club finished in a tie for 14th Place out 60 teams with 122.5 points. 4th Place among Class B/C clubs in attendance. The club was paced by four individual placers on the Varsity side and another two placers in the JV brackets.
Finally, a small group of five Highlanders competed in the “Big Spring Brawl” also in Lewistown on Sunday. Desite the small team, GWC was still able to finish in 7th place out of 21 teams at the event. We crowned four CHAMPIONS on Sunday and those that attended got in some serious mat time!
This weekend we will begin the stretch run. The Highlanders will attend the Brodie Gorder Memorial in Sidney on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will feature the “Team Duals’ and Sunday will be the Invididual bracketed event.
