Highlanders Set New Standard in Sidney

The Highlanders closed out the 2024 “Regular Season” this weekend at the Annual Brodie Gorder Memorial Iron Eagle Team Duals and Individual Tournament in Sidney!

The Glasgow Wrestling Club has been attending the Team Duals for the last decade and this year’s marks the best finish in club history. GWC finished in 3rd Place overall out of 20 Dual Teams. Saturday brought high-intensity action to Sidney High School and our team responded by going 4-0 and winning the “D Pool”. During these preliminary duals; Glasgow defeated Williston, Butte, Sidney (JV), and Lewistown. That effort landed them in the “Gold Bracket” late Saturday afternoon.

The Gold Bracket featured three other regional power house programs; Team Champs Black (Billings West), Dakota Rattlers (Minot, ND.), and Team Brodie (Sidney Varsity). The Highlanders were defeated by the eventual 1st place squad, Team Champs Black, during semifinal action, but it was a very competitive effort by our local kids. To close it out, GWC was pitted against their Northeast Montana rival, Team Brodie out of Sidney. In the end, it was the Highlanders that grabbed the convincing 65-50 victory over the host club. AWESOME job GWC.

On Sunday, it was time for the Individual tournament. The Highlanders were the 3rd largest team at the event, with 48 wrestlers taking the mat. This year’s Brodie Gorder Iron Eagle featured a record 38 teams and 696 competitors. GWC would crown 8 Individual Champions and 36 out of 48 Highlanders would find the podium with a Top 6 finish! The club finished with the 4th most Pins/Tech Falls at the event and an overall 55% winning percentage.

Postseason begins this week as the club will head to the Billings Metra to compete at the STATE AAU Tournament on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 70+ Highlanders are expected to make the trek to the big dance.

Highlanders Emrace the Challenge at Middle School State

The Glasgow Wrestling Club has officially entered the “stretch run” of the 2024 season and 58 Highlanders were back on the mats over the weekend! When the calendar flips to March it always represents the most crucial four weeks of competition. The Middle School State Tournament is traditionally held on the first Saturday of March in Lewistown, Montana and provides the youth club’s 5th thru 8th graders with a chance at ALL-Class recognition! This year’s Montana Middle School State Championships had a record 772 wrestlers in attendance. GWC brought a club record 20 wrestlers to the premier event. When the dust settled, the Highlanders would tie a club record with SIX individual place winners. Jack Morehouse and Tyler King would lead the way with both finishing runner-up in their respective weight classes. The Highlander boys finished 12th place overall out of 55 teams with 117.5 team points. It was good enough for 3rd place among Class B/C feeder programs. The Highlander girls finished in 11th place overall out of 44 teams with 64.5 team points. It was good enough for 6th place among Class B/C feeder programs.

Also on Saturday, 25 young Highlanders attended the Battle in the Badlands in Glendive. GWC’s small contingent impressed with 7 individual Champions and 19 top three finishers. A 61% overall winning percentage was tops among the 16 clubs in attendance!

Finally on Sunday, a group of Highlanders closed out the weekend at the Big Spring Brawl in Lewistown. The team finished in 2nd place overall out of 13 clubs with 81 team points. Only finishing behind the tournament host; the Fergus Wrestling Club. 13 Highlanders showed up and showed out, finishing with 5 individual Champions and putting all 13 on the podium with top five finishes. Again, Glasgow would finish with the best team winning percentage at the event. Winning at a 65% clip on Sunday!

This Thursday will be the club’s most important annual fundraiser. The Glasgow Wrestling Club’s 19th Annual Spaghetti Feed and Pie Auction will get underway at the Glasgow Elks Lodge at 6:00 PM. Auction will begin at 7:00 PM. The final 4 weeks of the season will feature incredible competition. Sidney’s Brodie Gorder Memorial, State AAU and the Montana Open (both in the Billings Metra), and Black Hills Nationals in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Young Grapplers Shine in Wolf Point and Havre

The Highlanders are in midseason form! Wolf Point and Havre provided some great competition over the weekend and the boys and girls once again seemingly passed every test. The club split up on Saturday as the majority wrestled in the Wolf Point Invitational while many 5th thru 8th graders headest west to the Havre Middle School Invitational.

Wolf Point featured nine different clubs and offered the 47 Highlanders in attendance another opportunity at key divisional opponents. GWC crowned 16 Individual Champions and secured 34 top three finishers in Wolf Point! The future Scotties finished with the 2nd most Pins/Tech Falls at the event with 54 total and a 64% overall winning percentage.

The Havre Middle School event is school sanctioned for Central Montana and has traditionally allowed clubs to enter to boost the competition level. A small group of Highlanders brought some punch to the meet and would walk away with 3 Individual titles! 12 out of 13 grapplers found the podium with a top 6 finish. GWC had the BEST winning percentage out of the 15 teams in attendance; finishing at 71% (34-14 overall record).

On Sunday, the young Highlanders teamed up with some of the older kids to compete in the Pre-Pony Rumble at Havre High School! 15 clubs and 221 wrestlers formed a small Northeast Division event. GWC traveled with 24 and walked away with 11 Champions! 19 of 24 Highlanders finished in the top three and the team impressed with a 63% overall winning percentage.

Next weekend will have the Highlanders in two different directions once again. The Glendive Invitational will host their local AAU tournament on Saturday. The Montana Middle School State Championships will also be held on Saturday in Lewistown for all 5th thru 8th grade wrestlers. On Sunday, there will be a Little Guy event, called the “Big Spring Brawl”, also in Lewistown.

Highlanders Flex Muscle in Poplar and Butte

The Glasgow Wrestling Club once again enjoyed an action-packed weekend with plenty of success! 43 Highlanders headed 70 miles east to participate in the Poplar Invitational on Saturday, while 24 wrestlers made the long westward trek to Butte to participate in the prestigous “Cyclops” event on Saturday and Sunday.

In Poplar, GWC would crown 12 Individual Champions and 31 top three finishers. The team turned in the 2nd most pins/tech falls at the event with 50 overall and finished with a 59% winning percentage for the day. The tournament featured 11 local clubs.

In Butte, it was nothing short of dominance on a grand stage as 20 out of 24 Highlanders would find the podium and secure a top six finish. An incredible 14 Highlanders would ultimately wrestle in the Championship round. The club finished with 12 runner-ups and two Individual Champions. Collins Flaten and Jack Morehouse would both grab gold in their respective weight classes.

The Cyclops is the largest annual event in the State of Montana outside of State AAU and the Montana Open. This year’s version featured 75 clubs and 1,157 wrestlers. GWC finished with 130 points. Good enough for 5th Place Overall and 2nd Place in the Medium Team standings. The Highlanders trailed only four Class AA feeder programs in the final standings; Team Champs (Billings West), Mine Yard Dogs (Butte), Kalispell (Flathead), and North Montana (Great Falls High). GWC was the 10th largest team in attendance and posted an astonishing 81-33 overall record. That is winning at a 71% clip.

On Saturday, the 6th thru 8th grade grapplers also competed in the Mining City Middle School Tournament in Butte as each of them awaited their Sunday turn at the Cyclops. Riley Pattison grabbed an Individual title at the MS event and three others garnered a top 3 finish!

This weekend the club will be back in the AAU Northeast Division with events in Wolf Point and Havre. Wolf Point will host their annual Invitational on Saturday. Havre will host a middle school event on Saturday for 5th-8th graders and their youth tournament will take place on Sunday. The Highlanders plan to have a large contingent at every event.

Highlanders Reign Supreme at MonDak Open and Border Brawl

It was another great weekend for our Hometown Highlanders! The Glasgow Wrestling Club tested their mettle at the MonDak Open in Williston on Saturday and the Border Brawl in Plentywood on Sunday. Neither event could hold GWC down, however, as it was another ultra-successful showing for the future Scotties.

On Saturday, the MonDak Open was held at “The Well” on the campus of Williston State College. It featured 34 clubs and 551 wrestlers! The Glasgow Wrestling Club had the 3rd largest club in attendance with 55 strong. At the end of a long day of wrestling, GWC would finish with 14 individual Champions and 36 top three finishes! The team grabbed the 2nd most pins/tech falls with 63 in total. Only the tournament host would finish with more. The team’s 61% winning percentage trailed only the Dakota Rattlers (Minot, ND).

On Sunday, a smaller contingent of Highlanders took part in the Border Brawl held in the Plentywood High School Gymnasium. Sunday’s group was small, but mighty! 21 Highlanders made the trek and participated in an event that featured 10 clubs and 175 wrestlers. GWC had the 4th largest team at this small event; yet finished with the 2nd most pins/tech falls with 39 total and a tournament best winning percentage of 68%. 10 Individual Champions were crowned at the Border Brawl, while 20 individuals finished in the top three!

Next weekend provides the lone “open” weekend on the traditional Glasgow Wrestling Club Schedule. The open week is strategically placed to allow all youth wrestlers and their parents a chance to attend the High School State Championships at the Billings Metra. Good Luck to our Scotties this weekend!

Highlanders DOMINATE Home and Rival Mats

This year’s Glasgow Wrestling Club Invitational SMASHED a participation record for a 4th consecutive year. Saturday’s event featured 19 clubs and an incredible 549 wrestlers which topped last year’s record of 472. It is the largest tournament ever held in the Northeast Division of Montana AAU. WOW.

Despite the massive attendance, the event could not have ran any smoother! Tournament organizers and parents worked collaboratively on an event that ended up finishing 890 matches on 8 mats in just under 6 hours. Hats off to everyone who once again played a part in such a succesful event and thank you to ALL of the kids and parents who made the trek to Glasgow this year.

The Highlanders made sure to take full advantage of the HOME mats! GWC had the largest team in attendance with 84 wrestlers in competition. Ultimately, 22 Highlanders would WIN Individual Championsips and 50 would secure a Top 3 finish. The Glasgow Wrestling Club also led the tournament with 101 Pins/Tech Falls and finished with an overall 57% winning percentage.

On Sunday, the Highlanders were right back into competition as they traveled 70 miles west to Malta for the Annual “Cover the Court” tournament. This year’s Cover the Court event featured 15 clubs and a record turnout of 333 wrestlers in attendance. Only the host club would have more wrestlers at the event than GWC’s contingent of 47 grapplers! It was another impressive showing from our local squad with 14 Individual CHAMPIONS and 29 Top 3 finishes. Leading the tournament once again in Pins/Tech Falls with 51 total and an overall winning percentage of 53%.

Next weekend; the Glasgow Wrestling Club will head east to Williston on Saturday for the annual MonDak Open and the Plentywood Border Brawl on Sunday.

The 5th place finish ties the club record from last season at the Montana Open. The Highlanders topped every Class A and Class B/C feeder program at the prestigous event. Team Champs (Billings West), Team Real Life (Post Falls, Idaho), Billings Wrestling Club, and Mine Yard Dogs (Butte) were the only four teams to finish ahead of GWC in the final standings.
Three wrestlers claimed “The Skull” by winning Individual Championships and a CLUB RECORD 33 Individuals placed in the top 6 at the event to find themselves on the podium! Last year’s total of 24 placers was the previous standard. The three champions is tied for the 2nd most for the Highlanders at the Montana Open in the 17-year history of the event.
6th Graders, Jack Morehouse and Aiden Aune, will now represent Team Montana at the AAU National Duals in Iowa this weekend as the youth season officially comes to a close. It was another ultra-succesfull season for the local squad and they will be back and ready to make some more noise next winter.
